Día de la Constitución Española

The Día de la Constitución Española (Spanish Constitution Day) is celebrated annually on 6 December throughout Spain, including in Nerja, as a national public holiday.

What is Constitution Day?

Constitution Day commemorates the approval of the 1978 Spanish Constitution, a pivotal moment in Spain's transition to democracy following the end of Franco's dictatorship. It marks the establishment of a constitutional monarchy and the recognition of fundamental rights and freedoms for all Spanish citizens.

Celebrations in Nerja

In Nerja, the day is observed with a series of institutional and cultural events, typically held at the Town Hall (Casa Consistorial):

  • 11:00 AM – Institutional Ceremony: The mayor, councillors, and municipal group representatives read the official Manifesto of the Town Hall commemorating the Constitution.

  • Youth Participation: Four local youths, who have reached or will reach the age of 18 during December, ceremonially raise the four flags (Spain, Andalusia, Nerja, and the European Union) on the Town Hall balcony.

  • Musical Performance: A concert by the Nerja Municipal Band is held in the Town Hall's lower courtyard, offering a festive atmosphere to the proceedings.

These events are open to the public and provide an opportunity to engage with the local community and reflect on Spain's democratic values.

Public Holiday Status

As a national public holiday, 6 December is a day off for the general population, with most businesses and public offices closed. It's an excellent opportunity to participate in local events or enjoy the festive atmosphere in Nerja.
