A Day Out Skiing in Sierra Nevada - A Wonderful Winter Escape

Sierra Nevada is one of Spain’s most remarkable mountain ranges. It forms part of the Penibético system and is home to some of the highest peaks in Europe including Veleta at 3,398 metres and Mulhacén, the highest mountain in the Iberian Peninsula at 3,479 metres. Its altitude gives it excellent, long-lasting snow conditions and makes it the southernmost ski resort in Europe.

This dramatic landscape is also a protected national park, rich in wildlife such as mountain goats, foxes and high-altitude bird species, with rare plants and breathtaking views that extend all the way to the Mediterranean on clear days. It’s a place of extremes, deep winter snow and warm coastal sunshine within a single day’s reach - and that is exactly what makes a visit here so special.

If you’re living on the coast or staying in the Axarquía area during winter, one of the most unforgettable day trips you can take is to Sierra Nevada. It’s a place where crisp mountain air meets brilliant sunshine, and where you can spend the morning skiing in deep winter and the late afternoon dipping your toes back into the Mediterranean.

Getting an Early Start

To make the most of the day, leave early ( around 7am) and plan to arrive in Pradollano, the main village at the foot of the slopes, by around 9 am. The atmosphere at this hour is lively but not yet crowded, and parking is still manageable. There is private parking right next to the lifts, extremely convenient though it comes with a charge. Once parked, it’s easy to settle into the day.

The village offers everything you need: ski and snowboard rentals, boots, helmets, and plenty of clothing and accessories. Many people prefer to rent on-site rather than travel with equipment, and the convenience makes the start of the day smooth and stress-free.

Slopes for Everyone

Sierra Nevada caters beautifully to all levels. Beginners can enjoy gentle green slopes and wide, forgiving blues near the Borreguiles area. Intermediate skiers will love the flowing reds and more challenging blues spread across the resort, while advanced skiers can head straight for the black slopes and steeper sections that deliver both challenge and excitement.

A highlight for many is the famous El Río run, a long scenic slope that winds down toward the village. On a clear day, you’ll enjoy endless views and that wonderful sense of space only the mountains can offer.

Snowfall & Best Time to Visit

Although Christmas is a magical time to visit and we have spent Christmas days there ourselves, the most reliable snow usually arrives in January and February. Sierra Nevada’s advanced snow-making system often keeps slopes open early and late into the season, but it’s always wise to check the condition reports and forecast before you go.

Lunch with a View

Several restaurants sit right beside the slopes, making lunch easy and convenient. There are Mediterranean dishes, grills, burgers and lighter options to choose from. During Christmas and school holidays these venues become very busy, so eating slightly earlier or later helps. The slopes also get livelier during peak periods, and snowboarders can sometimes whisk past quickly, so a little extra care is helpful if you're skiing with children or beginners.

Shops & Ski Clothing

Pradollano has excellent shops selling ski equipment, warm clothing, accessories, gloves, goggles, helmets and more. It’s ideal if you need to pick up something last-minute or simply enjoy browsing. You’ll also find places offering high-quality equipment for both sale and rental.

Activities Beyond Skiing

Sierra Nevada is not only for skiers. There is a dedicated sledding slope with snow slides, making it a favourite with families. Snowshoeing offers a slower, scenic way to explore the mountains, and snowmobiles and sleigh rides add exciting alternatives to skiing. The resort offers different activity passes and also provides special equipment and support for visitors with disabilities, ensuring accessibility for all.

Staying Overnight

If you decide to turn your day trip into a weekend or longer winter break, book early. Accommodation in Pradollano fills up incredibly fast during the festive season, we booked our Christmas stay six months in advance, (cheaper price) and some places were already full. Nearby villages also offer lovely options that are quieter and sometimes more affordable, while still being very close to the resort.

A MUST Tip: The Sierra Nevada App

The official Sierra Nevada app is excellent and highly recommended. It gives real-time snow conditions, open slopes and lifts, maps, webcams, restaurant and shop listings, events, ticket options and lodging information. Booking your lift passes online through the app or website also saves you from standing in long queues when you arrive.

From Snow-Capped Peaks to the Sea

One of the joys of Sierra Nevada is the contrast. After a full day of skiing under bright winter skies, you can be back on the coast by late afternoon, warming up in the sun or even taking a swim. Few places in the world offer snowy mountain peaks and the Mediterranean Sea within such easy reach - it’s an experience everyone should try at least once.
