Dragonfruit Delights- From Bloom to Bowl
There’s something magical about dragonfruit. From the first time you see its cactus-like plant winding its way up a fence to the moment its incredible flowers bloom at night, it feels like you’ve planted a little piece of wonder in your garden. I first picked it for our garden as I love cactuses for easy maintenance but this cactus comes with benefits; colourful, super healthy fruits, a win win! Ours, like most, ripen from late summer into early autumn — usually July through September — and if not grown at home, they’re just as beautiful to pick up at a local market.
Dragonfruit is a joy not only for its looks but also for its health benefits. Rich in antioxidants, fibre, vitamin C, magnesium and even prebiotics, it’s light on calories but big on goodness. It may not always be the strongest tasting fruit, but what it gives in return is its stunning colour — that vibrant pink flesh that transforms even the simplest dish into something fun and uplifting.
In our kitchen, dragonfruit has become a playful ingredient. The big kids love it mixed into smoothies, stirred through yogurt, or sprinkled over cereal for breakfast. It also makes a naturally sweet, refreshing homemade ice cream — with no need for added colour, because nature has already done the job.
From bloom to bowl, dragonfruit is proof that food is about more than flavour — it’s about colour, texture, creativity, and the small joys of eating something grown with care.
