Stay Safe in Nerja - Common Theft Tactics and How to Avoid Them

Nerja remains one of the safest and most welcoming towns in Spain, and the vast majority of residents and visitors never experience any problems. However, as with any popular tourist destination, opportunistic thieves occasionally operate in busy areas, particularly during the summer months.

The good news is that most thefts can be avoided with a little awareness. Many thieves rely on distraction rather than force, taking advantage of moments when people are relaxed, distracted or simply enjoying their holiday.

Here are some of the most common methods that have been reported in and around Nerja.

The "Lost Tourist" Method

Someone approaches holding a map or mobile phone and asks for directions. While you focus on helping them, they may move unusually close to you, or an accomplice may attempt to access your bag, backpack or pockets. Sometimes the map itself is used to cover the theft.

Flowers, Rosemary and Small Gifts

A person may offer you a flower, a sprig of rosemary or another small gift. While engaging you in conversation or placing the item in your hand, they may distract you from your belongings. In some cases they later demand money for the "gift."

Pickpocketing in Crowded Areas

Busy streets, fiestas, public transport areas and popular attractions can attract pickpockets. They often work in pairs or small groups and rely on creating confusion or getting close without attracting attention.

Backpacks worn on your back, open handbags and phones sticking out of pockets are common targets.

Local Markets

Nerja's markets are wonderful places to browse, shop and enjoy the local atmosphere. There is often a visible police presence, which helps deter crime, but it is still sensible to remain alert.

As a general rule, any place where large numbers of people gather can create opportunities for opportunistic thieves.

Restaurant and Terrace Thefts

When enjoying a meal or drink, it is easy to become distracted by conversation and surroundings.

Avoid leaving handbags on the floor, hanging loosely from the back of a chair or placing phones and wallets on the table. Keep valuables within sight and reach at all times.

Beach Thefts

Most beach days pass without incident, but unattended belongings can attract unwanted attention.

If you are heading into the sea, avoid leaving phones, wallets, keys and other valuables unattended. Consider taking only what you need for the day.

Luxury Watches and Jewellery

There have also been reports in Nerja of thieves targeting expensive watches and jewellery. In some cases, victims have reported that a vehicle pulled up alongside them, someone jumped out, tried grabbing a watch and quickly drove away.

Fortunately, the individuals involved were not physically harmed, but the experience was understandably very upsetting.

If you wear an expensive watch, jewellery or carry luxury accessories, it is worth being extra aware of your surroundings, particularly in busy areas, car parks, promenades and places where people gather.

Rental Cars and Luggage Theft

Visitors often arrive in Nerja with hire cars that can be easily identified as rental vehicles. Unfortunately, thieves know that rental cars may contain luggage, passports, electronics and other valuables.

A common scenario is when visitors stop for lunch, shopping or sightseeing before checking into their accommodation, or after checking out and before beginning their journey home. Suitcases and bags are left in the car while the occupants are away, sometimes for only a short time.

Thieves may target these vehicles in the hope of finding valuables inside. Even items hidden in the boot are not always safe if criminals have seen luggage being loaded into the vehicle.

If possible, avoid leaving suitcases, backpacks, handbags, laptops, cameras or other valuables in a parked car. If you must leave items in the vehicle, keep them completely out of sight and park in a busy, well-lit area.

The safest option is to take valuables with you or leave them securely at your accommodation rather than in a vehicle.

Holiday Apartments and Home Security

While uncommon, there have been reports of break-ins where thieves have entered properties through unlocked doors or windows during the night while residents or visitors were asleep inside.

Many of these incidents appear to be crimes of opportunity rather than targeted burglaries. For that reason, it is always sensible to lock doors and windows before going to bed and ensure terrace and balcony doors are properly secured.

Most thieves are looking for an easy opportunity. A locked door is often enough to make them move on and look elsewhere.

A Few Simple Precautions

• Keep bags zipped and close to your body.

• Carry backpacks on your front in crowded areas.

• Keep phones and wallets out of back and side pockets.

• Avoid leaving valuables visible in parked cars.

• Never leave suitcases, handbags or electronics in a car while you are away from it ( except maybe in the boot - not visible.)

• Lock doors and windows when leaving home and before going to sleep.

• Be cautious of strangers creating unnecessary distractions.

• Stay aware in busy areas, markets, fiestas and public transport hubs.

• Keep handbags, phones and wallets within sight when dining out.

• If someone approaches with a map, flower, rosemary sprig or other distraction, remain aware of your belongings.
