Miel de La Almijara and Axarquía - Artisan Honey from Andalusian Mountains

In the sunlit mountains of Granada and Málaga, beekeepers produce Miel de La Almijara and Miel de Axarquía, raw honeys that reflect the diverse flora of southern Spain. Over 5000 beekeepers operate in Andalucia region (many are part-time or small scale). Here, a jar of honey is as common as bread on the table. It’s not just honey — it’s tradition in a jar.

Crafted using traditional methods, each variety captures a different note from the landscape. Across this rugged region, many small-scale producers tend their hives with care and dedication, often following techniques passed down through generations. These local beekeepers work in harmony with the land, allowing wildflowers, herbs, and fruit blossoms to shape the flavor and texture of each harvest. The result is a wide range of distinctive honeys, each rooted in place and season.

Flavors include mil flores (wildflower), smooth and floral; eucalipto (eucalyptus), intense and soothing; aguacate(avocado blossom), dark and rich; and tomillo (thyme), earthy and herbal. Other regional types include romero (rosemary), gently aromatic; azahar (orange blossom), sweet and citrusy; castaño (chestnut), deep and slightly bitter; and espliego (lavender), soft with floral complexity.

These honeys are sold at local markets and bakeries, and small artisan shops.

Axarquía and Alpujarra honey make a perfect gift for yourself to take with you home or to family — natural, delicious, and a true taste of Nerja, Andalusia.
