Miel de Caña, La Almijara & Axarquía - Artisan Honey from Andalusian Mountains
In the sunlit mountains of Granada and Málaga, beekeepers produce Miel La Almijara and Miel de Axarquía, raw honeys that reflect the diverse flora of southern Spain. Over 5000 beekeepers operate in Andalucia region (many are part-time or small scale). Here, a jar of honey is as common as bread on the table. It’s not just honey - it’s tradition in a jar.
Crafted using traditional methods, each variety captures a different note from the landscape. Across this rugged region, many small-scale producers tend their hives with care and dedication, often following techniques passed down through generations. These local beekeepers work in harmony with the land, allowing wildflowers, herbs, and fruit blossoms to shape the flavor and texture of each harvest. The result is a wide range of distinctive honeys, each rooted in place and season.
Flavors include mil flores (wildflower), smooth and floral; eucalipto (eucalyptus), intense and soothing; aguacate (avocado blossom), dark and rich; and tomillo (thyme), earthy and herbal. Other regional types include romero (rosemary), gently aromatic; azahar (orange blossom), sweet and citrusy; castaño (chestnut), deep and slightly bitter; and espliego (wild lavender), soft with floral complexity.
These honeys are sold at local markets and bakeries, and small artisan shops.
When honey is described as “Miel de Axarquía,” is not a brand. It refers to a geographical area - the Axarquía region in eastern Málaga province. The term indicates that the honey comes from hives located within this specific territory, which includes coastal and inland municipalities such as Nerja, Frigiliana, Torrox, Vélez-Málaga, Cómpeta, and the surrounding mountain villages. There are many brands and many flavours. However, Miel La Almijara is used as a brand name, but it also reflects their local terroir. All very reliable and good products!
Unique Regional Speciality is also Miel de Caña from Frigiliana. Though called honey, this is a unique sugarcane molasses produced exclusively at the Nuestra Señora del Carmen factory in Frigiliana. It is much darker in its texture, very special and amazing taste.
Sellers must make it clear that the name refers to the origin of the honey. If the honey is not produced within the Axarquía region, it should not be marketed under that name. Transparency about the exact production area helps maintain trust, authenticity, and respect for local producers. Axarquía and Alpujarra honey, or a jar of Miel de Caña, make a perfect gift for yourself to take with you home or to family - natural, delicious, and a true taste of Andalusia. Enjoy your local produce and support the local beekeepers and businesses.
