Día de Andalucía
The date commemorates the historic 28 February 1980 referendum, when the people of Andalusia voted to become an autonomous community under the Spanish Constitution. It was a powerful moment of unity and civic pride, confirming Andalusia’s right to self-governance alongside other historic regions.
But this day is about much more than politics.
It is about culture, heritage and belonging. The green and white Andalusian flag represents hope (green) and peace (white). Across the region, schools sing the Andalusian anthem, town halls raise the flag, and communities gather in plazas to celebrate with music, flamenco, local food and traditional dress.
In places like Nerja, the atmosphere is joyful and proud. You’ll often see families dressed in traditional attire, performances in public squares, and neighbours coming together to celebrate what makes this southern region so unique.
Andalusia’s identity has been shaped by centuries of layered history — from Roman times to Al-Andalus, from maritime trade to agricultural traditions. Día de Andalucía honours that shared story and the resilience, warmth and creativity of its people.
It’s a reminder that Andalusia is not just a place on the map — it’s a culture, a rhythm, a way of life.
And here in Nerja, with the Mediterranean as backdrop, it feels especially meaningful. 💚🤍
While Día de Andalucía is a quieter affair compared to some of Nerja's larger festivals, it holds significant cultural importance. The town typically organizes events that reflect Andalusian heritage and pride.
Nerja Town Hall will celebrate the 46th anniversary of Andalusia Day
With an official institutional ceremony taking place at 10:15am in Plaza de Andalucía, in the Las Protegidas neighbourhood.
The honour of raising the Andalusian flag will go to Ascensión Calvente Jaime, affectionately known throughout the municipality as Susi Calvente, in recognition of her long-standing contribution and connection to the town.
As tradition dictates, the Manifesto of the Andalusian Federation of Municipalities and Provinces will be read, a declaration to which the Town Hall formally adheres.
In addition, children from the municipality’s schools, together with representatives from the Las Protegidas Neighbourhood Association, will actively take part in the celebration by reading poems dedicated to each of the eight provinces and to Andalusia, paying tribute to the rich cultural, historical and social heritage of our autonomous community.
The ceremony will also feature the participation of the Nerja Municipal Band and the CPA Seniors Choir of Nerja, who will provide the musical accompaniment for this meaningful day for all Andalusians.
Nerja Town Hall invites both residents and visitors to attend this commemorative event, which each year strengthens the sense of identity, coexistence and Andalusian pride in Nerja.
ALSO
On this day, Nerja will once again celebrate the 36th edition of the “Día del Pedal” (Cycling Day).
As usual, the event will feature two routes, both starting and finishing at Plaza de España from 12:00 noon. Children under the age of six will enjoy a specially adapted mini-circuit, while the general route will pass through the main streets of Nerja, inviting residents and visitors of all ages to take part.
The celebrations will continue into the afternoon. From 3:00 pm to 21.00, Plaza de España will host the second edition of Multiaventura Day, a free event that complements Día del Pedal with fun and sporting activities for the whole family. There will be a climbing wall, zip line, bouncy castles, face-painting and nail-painting workshops, as well as zumba sessions for those who want to keep moving.
Prizes will be awarded for the most original bicycle and for the oldest participant, along with the traditional raffle draw. All registered participants will receive a commemorative T-shirt marking this 36th edition.
The Town Hall invites residents of Nerja and Maro, as well as visitors — especially cycling enthusiasts — to join this festive day that each year brings together sport, community spirit, and celebration in the heart of Nerja.
