Noche de San Juan

A beach celebration at Burriana with bonfires, music, and the tradition of dipping feet in the sea at midnight.

The Noche de San Juan (Saint John's Eve) in Nerja is a vibrant celebration marking the arrival of summer. In 2025, it will take place on Monday, June 23, continuing into the early hours of Tuesday, June 24.

Event Highlights

  • Start Time: Festivities commence at 10:00 PM on June 23.

  • Live Music: The evening kicks off with a performance by the local group Al Alba, energizing the crowd until midnight.

  • Midnight Ritual: At 12:00 AM, the traditional "Quema del Júa" (burning of the effigy) takes place, symbolizing the cleansing of the past year's misfortunes.

  • Fireworks Display: Following the bonfire, a spectacular fireworks show lights up the night sky.

  • Continued Festivities: From 12:15 AM to 2:00 AM, the group Proyecto Mandarina will keep the celebration alive with their music.

  • Traditional Swim: It's customary to dip your feet—or even take a swim—in the sea at midnight, believed to purify and bring good luck.

Location

Main events are held at Playa de Burriana, Nerja's most popular beach. The beach will be adorned with bonfires, and the atmosphere will be filled with music, dancing, and communal joy.

Important Guidelines

To ensure a safe and enjoyable experience, the local authorities have established the following regulations:

  • Camping: Setting up tents or camping on the beach is permited for this night. Many camp on Burriana or Playazo Beach.

  • Bonfire Restrictions: Only authorized bonfires are permitted; personal fires must comply with safety regulations.

  • Music Hours: Loud music is restricted between 4:00 PM and 10:00 PM; after this period, music is allowed but should be kept at reasonable volumes.

  • Safety Measures: Increased security and emergency services will be present to ensure the safety of all attendees.

For a comprehensive list of rules and safety measures, please refer to the official Nerja Town Hall website or their social media channels.

Cultural Significance

The Noche de San Juan is deeply rooted in both pagan and Christian traditions. Historically, it celebrates the summer solstice, symbolizing the triumph of light over darkness. In Nerja, the rituals of fire and water are believed to purify and bring blessings for the coming year.
