Romería de San Isidro

A pilgrimage from the Balcón de Europa to the Nerja Caves, featuring floats, music, and a mass in honor of the patron saint of farmers.

The Romería de San Isidro in Nerja is a cherished annual celebration held on May 15 to honor San Isidro Labrador, the patron saint of farmers. In 2025, the festivities will take place on Thursday, May 15.

Festival Overview

This traditional pilgrimage, known as a romería, begins with a Mass at 11:00 AM at the Church of El Salvador in Nerja, accompanied by the Peña Nerjeña choir. Following the service, a tribute to local farmers is held at the church entrance, featuring performances by the Folkloric Groups of Nerja and Maro.

At 12:00 PM, the procession departs from the Balcon de Europa, making its way through the streets of Nerja, including Calle Diputación, Calle Pintada, Plaza Cantarero, and Avenida de Pescia, before reaching the Cueva de Nerja around 3:00 PM. Participants include horse riders, carriages, ox-drawn carts, and many walking pilgrims, all dressed in traditional Andalusian attire.

Upon arrival, the statue of San Isidro is placed in the hermitage, followed by a tribute featuring traditional dances and music. The celebration continues with various activities, including live music, dancing, and a festive atmosphere that lasts into the evening.

Transportation

To facilitate access to the event, a shuttle bus service operates between Nerja and the Cueva de Nerja from 12:00 PM to 12:30 AM, with buses departing approximately every 20 minutes. This service ensures that attendees can enjoy the festivities without concerns about parking or transportation.
