Romería de San Isidro
A pilgrimage from the Balcón de Europa to the Nerja Caves, featuring floats, music, and a mass in honor of the patron saint of farmers.
The Romería de San Isidro in Nerja is a cherished annual celebration held on May 15 to honor San Isidro Labrador, the patron saint of farmers.
Festival Overview
The celebrations will begin at 11:00am with a holy mass at El Salvador Church, featuring the participation of Los Ortigosa and the traditional offering of fruits. Afterwards, a tribute to the farmers will take place at the entrance of the church, accompanied by performances from Los Ortigosa and the Nerja and Maro Folklore Group.
At 12:00pm, the pilgrimage procession will begin from the Balcón de Europa to the Nerja Cave grounds, accompanied by pipers and drummers, horses, oxen, decorated carts, and many pilgrims dressed in traditional costumes, filling the route with colour and festive atmosphere.
Upon arrival at the Nerja Cave grounds, the dance group of Christian David Callejón will welcome the procession and pay tribute to San Isidro with traditional dances before the image of the patron saint of farmers is placed in his chapel, now municipally owned. The grounds will include different areas for everyone to enjoy, including a youth zone, traditional zone, and equestrian zone, as well as live music and festive entertainment throughout the day.
Councillor for Popular Traditions Elena Gálvez highlighted that:
“San Isidro Pilgrimage is one of the most beloved and widely attended celebrations in our municipality, a day of togetherness where residents, associations and visitors share our traditions and keep alive a festival with deep popular roots.”
Meanwhile, Deputy Mayor Francisco Arce invited “the people of Nerja, Maro and visitors to enjoy this very special celebration, which pays tribute to our farmers and highlights our customs, especially meaningful this year as it also coincides with a local holiday.”
Nerja Town Hall encourages all residents and visitors to take part in this traditional celebration in honour of San Isidro Labrador, patron saint of farmers, in a day of community spirit and celebration for Nerja and Maro.

In addition, Nerja Town Hall will provide a special bus service operating between Nerja and the Cave grounds from 12:00 midday until 23.30.
