Doggy Summer Survival Guide for Nerja's Hottest Months

Summer in Nerja is a wonderful time of year, but it can also be one of the most challenging seasons for our four-legged friends.

Much of the advice in this article may seem obvious to experienced dog owners. However, every summer the Nerja Amigos team still sees dogs being walked on scorching pavements during the hottest part of the day, waiting in parked cars, or struggling in the heat without access to water, or left outside in hot terraces with no shade. For that reason alone, these reminders are always worth sharing.

A little extra care can make a huge difference to your dog's comfort, health, and safety during the hottest months of the year.

Hot Pavements and Sand Can Burn Paws

One of the biggest dangers during summer is the temperature of pavements, roads, and beach sand. While the air temperature may feel manageable, surfaces exposed to direct sunlight can become much hotter and may easily exceed 50°C.

If a pavement or sandy beach feels too hot for the back of your hand, it is too hot for your dog's paws.

Burned paw pads can be extremely painful and may require veterinary treatment.

Signs of burned paws include:

• Limping or refusing to walk
• Excessive licking or chewing of the feet
• Redness or darkened paw pads
• Blisters or peeling skin
• Sensitivity when touching the paws

If you suspect your dog's paws have been burned, move them to a cool area immediately and contact a veterinarian if symptoms are severe.

Avoid Walking During the Hottest Hours

During summer, it is best to avoid walks between 12:00 and 18:00 whenever possible.

Instead, choose:

• Early morning walks before the heat builds
• Evening walks after sunset
• Shaded routes where possible
• Parks and natural areas with cooler ground surfaces

Remember that dogs cannot cool themselves as efficiently as humans. Even a short walk during the hottest part of the day can quickly lead to overheating.

Never Leave a Dog in a Car

This advice cannot be repeated often enough.

Even with the windows slightly open, the temperature inside a parked car can rise to dangerous levels within minutes.

Heatstroke can develop rapidly and may be fatal.

If you are running errands, leave your dog safely at home where they have access to shade, water, and ventilation.

Always Carry Water

When out with your dog, always bring water.

Not only should your dog have frequent opportunities to drink, but carrying a bottle of water also allows you to clean away urine from pavements and public areas. This simple gesture helps keep Nerja's streets cleaner and more pleasant for everyone.

Many local dog owners now carry a small bottle specifically for this purpose.

Many restaurants are also very happy to provide your dog with water and some have placed water bowl by their restaurants or shops.

Recognising Heat Stress

Dogs can suffer from heat exhaustion and heatstroke surprisingly quickly.

Watch for signs such as:

• Excessive panting
• Drooling more than normal
• Bright red gums or tongue
• Weakness or lethargy
• Vomiting or diarrhoea
• Difficulty walking or standing
• Collapse

If your dog shows these symptoms, move them immediately to a cool shaded area, offer small amounts of water, and seek veterinary assistance without delay.

What About the Beach?

Many people assume that all beaches are suitable for dogs, but during the summer season most beaches in Nerja do not allow dogs.

If you would like to enjoy the coast with your pet, there are dedicated dog-friendly beaches in neighbouring Torrox where dogs are welcome and can enjoy the sea alongside their owners.

Always check current regulations before visiting, as local rules may change.

Summer Can Still Be Fun

Summer doesn't have to mean staying indoors all day. Consider:

• Early morning beachside walks where permitted
• Evening strolls through town
• Shaded countryside routes
• Cooling mats at home
• Frozen dog treats made from suitable ingredients
• Interactive games indoors during the hottest hours

With a little planning, your dog can enjoy a safe and happy summer while avoiding the risks associated with extreme heat.

Our dogs rely on us to make sensible decisions on their behalf. A shorter walk, an extra bottle of water, or waiting until the evening may seem like small things, but they can make all the difference during the hottest months of the year.

Stay cool, stay hydrated, and enjoy a safe summer together. 🐾☀️
