October in Nerja: Autumn Full of Life
October has arrived, but summer certainly hasn’t disappeared from Nerja. The biggest summer crowds may have gone home, yet the beaches are still busy and the temperatures remain unusually warm as the autumn heat continues. Every now and then, a cloudy or rainy day rolls in, something that feels very welcome after such a long, hot summer - before the sunshine returns again.
And while the weather may be slowly changing, the calendar certainly isn’t slowing down. In fact, we can hardly keep up! October is packed with fiestas, culture, music, markets and celebrations across Nerja and the surrounding Axarquía.
Around the Neighbourhood
October gets off to a colourful start with the Art Route in Frigiliana, when artists open their doors and the village becomes one big gallery. Wander through its beautiful streets, discover paintings, photography, sculpture and other creative works, meet the artists and perhaps find something special to take home.
Over in Torrox, it is time for the Feria - several days when the town comes alive with music, dancing, fairground rides, food, celebrations and plenty of Andalusian feria atmosphere.
The Big One – Nerja Feria
Then comes one of Nerja’s biggest celebrations of the entire year: the Feria de Nerja.
For several days, the town is transformed with music, dancing, concerts, performances, colourful lights, fairground rides, food, late nights and entertainment for all ages. From daytime celebrations and activities for children to live music, traditional performances and evenings that continue well into the night, this is one of those weeks when Nerja simply doesn’t stand still.
Whether you join in for an afternoon, an evening or several days, the Feria is very much part of October life in Nerja.
Music, Theatre, Cinema and more
Our very own Centro Cultural Villa de Nerja also has a busy programme throughout October, with something happening every week.
Expect everything from blues and flamenco to comedy, tribute performances, charity events and special shows — including a Beatles tribute — alongside the popular cinema nights. It is well worth keeping an eye on the programme throughout the month because there is always something new to discover.
Nerja’s regular markets also continue throughout October, giving you another excuse to wander, browse and enjoy the slightly gentler pace of autumn.
And then comes Maroween!
As October draws towards its spooky finale, nearby Maro gets ready for Maroween — the village’s wonderfully fun take on Halloween.
Expect costumes, decorations, plenty of atmosphere and a night when the streets of Maro take on a very different character. It has become another October date to look forward to, bringing together Halloween fun with the lively community spirit Maro does so well.
A Bright Autumn in Nerja
October really is a wonderful month to be here. The weather is still warm, the beaches are still inviting and there is so much to see, do and experience — yet without quite the same intensity of the peak summer months.
