September in Axarquia
High summer is beginning to wind down, although the sunshine and warm weather are certainly not going anywhere just yet. After an August that brought some serious heatwaves, slightly cooler temperatures are very welcome. The sea is still wonderfully warm, the days are made for the beach and the evenings remain perfect for eating and socialising outdoors.
The crowds begin to ease a little as schools return and the peak summer holiday season comes to an end. September sits beautifully between two seasons: the busy family holidays of July and August and the autumn and winter months, when many of our regular longer-stay visitors return to Nerja to enjoy the sunshine and everything the town has to offer.
Latest Events – Let's Head into the Axarquía
While there is still plenty happening in Nerja, September is also the perfect month to turn our attention towards the white villages of the Axarquía.
And we don't have to travel far to begin.
Maro celebrates the Feria de las Maravillas
With four days of festivities bringing the village together in honour of the Virgen de las Maravillas. Expect music, dancing, traditions and plenty of that wonderful village feria atmosphere.
Almáchar and the Fiesta del Ajoblanco.
Ajoblanco is the traditional cold soup made with almonds, bread, garlic and olive oil, but this fiesta is about far more than one dish. It is a celebration of the village's traditions and the Moscatel heritage of the Axarquía.
Come hungry!
Next, we're off to celebrating the generations of men and women who have worked the vineyards surrounding this beautiful Axarquía village. The steep hillsides around Moclinejo are covered with Moscatel vines, and this fiesta puts the grape harvest, vineyards and traditional wine culture centre stage.
It's a wonderful excuse to head into the hills, explore somewhere new and experience a side of the Axarquía that is still deeply connected to the land.
El Borge for Día de la Pasa – Raisin Day
The Moscatel raisin is an important part of the history and identity of the Axarquía, and Día de la Pasa celebrates the people and traditional methods that have kept this heritage alive for generations. The whole village joins in, with local flavours, music, traditions and demonstrations connected to the production of the famous sun-dried Moscatel raisins.

Have a look through Nerja Amigos and read our articles about Almáchar, Moclinejo, El Borge and the villages of the Axarquía on our Local Escapes Page. Knowing a little about the places, their people and their traditions makes visiting their fiestas even more special.
Mango Season Arrives - and it brings something delicious to our Market Kitchen.
The local mango harvest generally gets underway around the end of August and beginning of September, with September being the heart of the season. Look out for locally grown mangoes appearing at markets and greengrocers and enjoy them while they are truly seasonal.
Back to School, but Not the End of Fun September means back to school for many of our younger Amigos, but weekends still leave plenty of time for adventures.
We'll continue looking for family activities, local events, places to explore and ideas for getting children away from screens and out discovering Nerja and the Axarquía.
Gastronomy – A Taste of September
From ajoblanco and Moscatel grapes to raisins and the first local mangoes, September is a particularly good month to explore the flavours of the Axarquía. We'll continue visiting restaurants, discovering local dishes and sharing the people and places behind the food we love.
Because around here, gastronomy isn't just about what is on the plate – it's part of our culture.
Nerja Amigos – Growing Through Partnerships
As we continue to grow, we're putting even more emphasis on partnerships and collaborations with local businesses, organisations and people who share our love for Nerja and the Axarquía.
Nerja Amigos was never intended to be simply a directory. We want to tell stories, introduce people to places they might otherwise miss, support good local businesses and create connections within our community.
And this autumn, we're taking another step forward with the development of the Nerja Amigos Business Club.
The idea is simple: to bring local businesses and professionals together, encourage collaboration, share ideas and create new opportunities to support one another.
September – Let's Explore
So while the pace of summer may be changing, September certainly isn't the end of it.
The beaches are still calling. The markets are bustling. Mango season is beginning. Our mountain villages are celebrating centuries-old traditions. And a whole new season of Nerja Amigos is getting underway. And you can NOW download the Nerja Amigos mobile app for Apple iphones!
