August in Axarquía: Beach and Fiestas

What a way to head into August. Congratulations, Spain – World Champions! 🇪🇸🏆

Oh, how we have celebrated… and celebrated… and celebrated!

From packed bars and terraces to flags hanging from balconies and cheers echoing through the streets, Spain’s FIFA World Cup victory has given us a summer moment we won’t forget in a hurry.

The towns went crazy, the country went crazy, and here in Nerja we certainly joined in. What a fantastic feeling of togetherness, excitement and pure Spanish alegría. Well done, Spain! 🇪🇸

If July felt busy, August in Axarquía certainly does not slow down.

For many Spanish families, August is the traditional summer holiday month, and the coast fills with people heading to the sea for their annual break. Nerja is buzzing, restaurants and terraces are busy, and our beaches are very much in full summer mode.

Burriana, Torrecilla and the other favourites can get extremely busy, particularly at weekends. But remember, our coastline has so much more to discover. If you fancy somewhere a little more tranquila, have a look at the Beaches page and explore some of the smaller coves and more natural stretches of coastline. Sometimes a little extra effort getting there is rewarded with turquoise water, rugged scenery and a completely different side of summer on the Costa del Sol.

Summer evenings in Plaza de los Cangrejos

One of the loveliest things about summer in Nerja is how much happens outdoors. The summer programme at Plaza de los Cangrejos continues through August, bringing live entertainment to the square every evening until 25 August. Expect music, flamenco, jazz, pop, dance, theatre, magic and performances from local groups and artists.

Grab an ice cream, wander down after dinner and see what is happening. Sometimes the best summer evenings are the ones you haven’t planned.

Nerja’s White Party – save the date!

Another August favourite is returning! Nerja’s annual Fiesta Blanca – the White Party – takes place on 14 August at Playa El Salón.

Every summer, this beautiful little beach below the Balcón de Europa transforms for one of Nerja’s favourite summer nights. Dress in white and head down to the beach for an evening of music, dancing and summer atmosphere beside the Mediterranean.

The date is in the diary, but the full programme and timings have not yet been announced by the Town Hall.

Ferias, Fiestas and Village Nights

Explore Axarquía beyond the coast. Across the region, villages celebrate their ferias and fiestas with music, dancing, food, processions and festivities that continue well into the warm summer nights. There is always something happening somewhere, so keep an eye on the Calendar for the different ferias, fiestas and events taking place throughout Axarquía during August.

Remember that programmes, dates and timings can change, particularly with local fiestas, so we always recommend double-checking the latest information on the relevant Ayuntamiento page before setting off.

It is a wonderful way to experience a different side of the region and one of our favourite ways to spend an August day.

Tres Culturas returns to Frigiliana

And, of course, one of the big events of the month is the Festival Frigiliana 3 Culturas, taking place from 27–30 August 2026.

For four days, the beautiful streets of Frigiliana celebrate the Christian, Muslim and Jewish cultures that form part of the area’s history. Music, gastronomy, street entertainment, cultural activities and the artisan market transform the village, while the popular Ruta de la Tapa gives us another very good reason to arrive hungry.

It gets busy – very busy – but the atmosphere is something special.

And yes… salsa is back!

For those who like dancing under the stars, Salsa Evenings are back at Hotel Puerta del Mar. Summer nights, rooftop atmosphere, music, dancing and Nerja twinkling around you.

A More Serious Side to This Summer

Amid all the celebrations, this summer has also reminded us how powerful nature can be.

The tragic wildfires we have seen are a sobering reminder that during periods of extreme heat and dry conditions, we all need to take extra care.

The intense summer heat, combined with episodes of calima, has also been affecting the coast, sometimes turning those normally clear blue skies hazy and making already hot days feel particularly heavy. And during this extreme summer weather, please keep an eye on official notices and warnings from the Ayuntamientos, emergency services and government authorities. Conditions can change quickly, particularly during periods of extreme heat or when heading into the countryside and mountains.

And when it comes to fire risk, small actions matter. Be extremely careful with anything that could create a spark or flame, particularly around dry vegetation. Our beautiful countryside is especially vulnerable at this time of year, and protecting it is something we can all play a part in.

Enjoy August – Axarquía style

August here is loud, hot, colourful, crowded, joyful and occasionally a little chaotic.

And explore beyond the obvious.

Find a quieter beach. Take a drive into the mountains. Dance some salsa. Dress in white and head to El Salón. Wander through a village feria. Spend an evening at Plaza de los Cangrejos. Experience Tres Culturas. Eat something you’ve never tried before. Discover a little more of the Axarquía we love.
