May in Nerja: Festivals, Flavours and Spring Fiestas
May doesn’t ease in quietly around Nerja - it arrives with a bang.
After the softer contrasts of March and April, May feels fuller, louder, and unmistakably alive. The light is stronger, the days stretch long into the evening, and life moves outdoors almost completely. Terraces are busy, beaches begin to fill properly, and the rhythm of the town shifts into something more vibrant.
And with that energy comes celebration after celebration.
It all begins just up the road in Frigiliana with the much-loved Día de la Miel de Caña. A day dedicated to one of the area’s most traditional products, where the village fills with music, local flavours, markets and a true sense of Andalusian heritage. It’s one of those events that feels both authentic and joyful - a perfect way to step into May.
Back in Nerja, the focus quickly turns to food. From 2nd to 13th May, the town hosts the Ruta de la Tapa, now in its twelfth edition, with 16 participating establishments. Bars and restaurants across Nerja serve their own carefully created tapas, inviting you to wander, taste, and discover new favourites along the way. There’s a playful element too - collect your stamps, explore different venues, and you can even win prizes. It’s social, delicious, and very much part of local life.
As the first weekend unfolds, the streets then transform again for Cruces de Mayo. Floral crosses appear, squares come alive, and there’s a feeling of colour and community that carries through the Sunday. It’s smaller and more local in feel, but no less charming.
Just a little further inland, in Sayalonga, another local gem takes place — the Día del Níspero, celebrating the region’s sweet spring fruit at the height of its season. It’s a lively village day with tastings, music and a warm, community feel, and well worth the short trip if you want to experience something truly local.just when you think things might settle, mid-May brings one of the most anticipated celebrations of all.
For a touch of evening magic, don’t miss Joe Labero live in Nerja on 9th, bringing his world-class illusions to the stage. It’s the perfect way to round off a day of festivities — dinner, drinks, and a little bit of the impossible.
On 15th May, Nerja honours San Isidro Labrador, the patron saint of farmers, with a day that blends tradition, countryside spirit and pure fiesta energy. The famous romería sees decorated carts, horses and groups of locals making their way out towards the countryside in celebration. It’s lively, joyful, and deeply rooted in the area’s identity. By now, May has found its rhythm.
Days are long and golden. Evenings are warm enough to linger. The sea begins to invite more than just the brave. And everywhere you go, there is something happening - music, food, tradition, laughter.
May is no longer about anticipation.
It is about living it.
Festival after festival. Flavour after flavour. Moment after moment.
And around Nerja, it’s one of the most joyful times of the year.
