WAITING FOR FURTHER INFORMATION
Plaza de Andalucía, in the Las Protegidas neighbourhood, will once again be at the heart of the Veladilla de San Miguel celebrations.
The programme for this year’s festivities has now been presented. The celebration will take place from 18 to 20 September, in a particularly significant year marking the 15th anniversary of the revival and reorganisation of the Veladilla.
The official posters for this year’s celebration were also unveiled. The main poster was created by Rocío San Martín, whose painting portrays a neighbourhood rich in roots, identity and tradition. The children’s poster was created by Lucía Jiménez, capturing the importance and excitement that the Veladilla de San Miguel holds for younger residents.
This year’s opening address (pregón) will be given by Francisco Gumersindo, known as Paco El Apañao, a local resident with strong ties to Las Protegidas. The youth opening address will be given by Erika Ramos Algarín.
Ahead of the main festivities, a Sevillanas workshop will take place on 11 and 12 September.
On 17 September, the traditional José Alaminos Façade and Entranceway Competition will celebrate its 14th edition, alongside a flamenco bag workshop.
The main celebration will once again include the election of the Children’s, Youth and Senior Queen and Gentleman, the Gran Cucaña, a dessert competition, a football tournament, and a wide variety of activities for all ages.
Music will also play a major part in the festivities. One of the highlights will be a concert by Las Soles on Saturday 19 September. The traditional Rociero Choir Gathering will take place on Friday, alongside other musical performances throughout the programme.
One of the most special moments will be the traditional floral offering to San Miguel, taking place on Saturday afternoon.
They also reaffirmed the municipality’s commitment to supporting Las Protegidas and working alongside the Residents’ Association to ensure that this traditional celebration continues to grow and thrive.

XXIV Arab-Andalusian Festival of Salares
Salares steps back into its Andalusian past for three days of culture, history, music and tradition at the 24th Arab-Andalusian Festival.
The festival celebrates the village’s rich Arab-Andalusian heritage and the history that can still be seen in its architecture and traditions today. Throughout the weekend, the streets of Salares will come alive with a traditional souk, belly dancing, falconry, street parades, flamenco, concerts, an equestrian show, art exhibitions, workshops and gastronomic tastings.
There will also be talks and conferences exploring the history and heritage of the area, together with the presentation of a book about Salares.
With activities for all ages, it is a lovely opportunity to explore one of the Axarquía’s small mountain villages while experiencing its history, food, music and traditions.

XII Quema de Algarrobo
XII Quema de Algarrobo
Steps back in time for the 12th edition of La Quema de Algarrobo, one of the municipality’s most distinctive annual celebrations. Over three days, the streets become the setting for historical re-enactments telling the story of Algarrobo, beginning with the capture of Maco Loco and the opening speech on Friday, followed by the main historical scenes and Historical Encounters Parade on Saturday, and further performances on Sunday.
A Little History
La Quema de Algarrobo takes the village back to the early 19th century. The main story recalls 1811, during the Spanish War of Independence, when French troops threatened to burn Algarrobo following clashes with local guerrillas. According to local tradition, a heroic horseman rode to Málaga and returned with a pardon just in time to save the village.
The celebrations also bring to life Maco Loco, a real and notorious local bandit from the early 1900s whose exploits became part of Algarrobo folklore. His capture and dramatic story now form part of the weekend’s historical re-enactments.

El Borge - Raisin Day Festival
El Borge - Día de la Pasa ( Raisin Day Festival )
El Borge celebrates one of its most important traditional festivals, the 29th Día de la Pasa, a day dedicated to the village’s famous Moscatel grapes and raisins and the generations of local families who have kept this tradition alive.
Known for its strong connection to Moscatel grape growing and raisin production, El Borge comes alive for a full day celebrating this important part of the Axarquía’s agricultural and cultural heritage.
Throughout the day, the village streets and squares will be filled with music, traditional food, local culture and a lively festival atmosphere.
Visitors can discover more about the traditions surrounding the Moscatel grape, taste local products and experience the character of a village whose history and identity remain closely connected to raisin production.
A lovely opportunity to explore El Borge and experience one of the Axarquía’s most distinctive traditional celebrations.

Villa de Nerja Folklore Festival
2nd Villa de Nerja Folklore Festival
Nerja celebrates the 2nd Muestra de Folclore Villa de Nerja, bringing traditional music, dance and folklore to the heart of the town.
The evening begins with a colourful parade through Nerja town centre, departing from beneath the Town Hall on Calle Carmen.
The celebrations continue in Plaza de España, with performances by traditional choir and dance groups from Granada, Vélez-Málaga, Nerja and Maro.
The programme also includes the Fandangos Cortijeros del Río de la Miel and the Panda de Verdiales de El Borge, showcasing two distinctive expressions of Málaga’s traditional musical heritage.
A lovely opportunity to experience the music, dances and traditions that form part of the cultural identity of Nerja and the surrounding region.
